Arkansas-based Alltel is a telecommunications company founded in 1983. In 2005, this company had $9.4 billion revenue with a net income of $1.331 billion. The following year the company posted $24.79 billion in revenues and boasted of 15 million subscribers.
Considered to be the United State’s fifth biggest mobile company, Alltel services at least 37 states. Its networks involve digital (CDMA) and analog (AMPS) systems which operate primarily on an 800 MHz bandwidth. In some places like Florida, Jacksonville and Wichita, Alltel added 1900 MHz PCS sites.
To improve its services, Alltel even entered into roaming contracts with its competitors including Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless. In 2006, Sprint agreed on an agreement which allowed Alltel to enhance its 1xEV-DO data and voice roaming coverage.
Alltel’s products and services include mobile handsets from Motorola, Blackberry, LG, Samsung, Pantech Curitel and Palm. Other services currently offered are Ask Me Now, My Circle and U Prepaid.
Alltel is also the major sponsor of Penske Racing (#12 Dodge Charger with driver Ryan Newman) in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and famous fisherman Scott Rook during the 2006 CITGO Bassmaster Tournament Trail.
